Taft is located in San Patricio County. The city was named after Charles P. Taft of Cincinnati. In 1909 the first dependable water supply on the Gulf Coast was discovered at Taft. Following which the city grew up into an agricultural-industrial complex for processing farm products. A cold storage and ice factory followed by a cotton compress and a feed mill were built to facilitate the growth of the agricultural-industrial complex.
